Kinney ranks with the representative citizens of Bartholomew County an 2 CONC d occupies a conspicuous place among the successful businessmen of centra 2 CONC l Indiana. His long residence in this part of the state has made him wid 2 CONC ely and favorably known, and since engaging in his present line of activi 2 CONC ty his name has become intimately associated with business transactions 2 CONC , which have brought him to the favorable notice of the public, not onl 2 CONC y in Indiana, but in many other commonwealths where duty has called him. 2 CONT Paternally Mr. Kinney comes of sturdy Scotch stock, his grandfather, a n 2 CONC ative of Scotland, having immigrated to America about 1800, or perhap 2 CONC s a year or two prior to that time, and settled in one of the eastern sta 2 CONC tes. George W. Kinney, the subject's father, a cooper by trade, also a s 2 CONC chool teacher for many years, was born in 1821. He spent the greater par 2 CONC t of his life in Ohio, but moved to Indiana in 1852, and died in Bartholo 2 CONC mew county in 1858. Elizabeth A. Ogilvie, wife of George W. Kinney and m 2 CONC other of the subject, was descended from an old Virginia family. She wa 2 CONC s born in 1825, and departed this life in 1897, at her home in the southe 2 CONC rn part of Bartholomew county. 2 CONT Emanuel H. Kinney is a native of Coshocton county, Ohio, where his birt 2 CONC h occurred on the 17th day of December, 1846, the scene of his childhoo 2 CONC d being the town of Keene, in which he spent the first six years of his l 2 CONC ife. Brought to Bartholomew county, in 1852, when the country was new an 2 CONC d sparsely settled, he experienced all the vicissitudes of farm life unde 2 CONC r such conditions, his services as soon as he was old enough being requir 2 CONC ed to clear the land and cultivate the same, in consequence of which hi 2 CONC s educational advantages were quite limited. The sum total of his intell 2 CONC ectual training included three months of each year from 1856, to 1862, du 2 CONC ring which time he attended school in a little log cabin, where he obtain 2 CONC ed a fair knowledge of the fundamental branches, reading, writing and ari 2 CONC thmetic. Possessing a studious nature, however, and being a great love 2 CONC r of books, he subsequently made good this deficiency by wide general rea 2 CONC ding, but by far the greater part of his education is of that intensely p 2 CONC ractical kind acquired by coming in contact with the world in the stern s 2 CONC chool of experience. 2 CONT Mr. Kinney remained at homes assisting with the work of the farm until 1 2 CONC 868, on December 28th of which year he entered marriage relation with Mis 2 CONC s Louisa Collier, and engaged in the pursuit of agriculture upon his ow 2 CONC n responsibility. He continued a tiller of the soil until 1873, at whic 2 CONC h time he removed to Waymanville and opened an insurance office, acceptin 2 CONC g the agency of several leading fire companies, in whose interest he succ 2 CONC eeded in due time in building up quite a large a lucrative business. I 2 CONC n 1877 he changed his residence from the above town to Walesboro, thenc 2 CONC e one year later removed to Columbus, in which city he found a larger an 2 CONC d more inviting field for the insurance business, and which place he ha 2 CONC s since made his home. Mr. Kinney's career as a solicitor of insurance w 2 CONC as eminently successful from the beginning, and but a few years elapsed u 2 CONC ntil he was the recognized leader in this branch of the business in the c 2 CONC ity of his residence. Representing many of the leading companies in th 2 CONC e United States, at a time when the great value of insurance was beginnin 2 CONC g to be appreciated, he succeeded in securing an extensive patronage, an 2 CONC d so pronounced was his success that in 1889 he was made a special agen 2 CONC t or adjuster, in which capacity he spent the ensuing eight years, travel 2 CONC ing during that time over the states of Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Kent 2 CONC ucky, West Virginia and part of Wisconsin, adjusting the losses his sever 2 CONC al companies had sustained. Since 1897 he has devoted his attention to t 2 CONC he large and constantly growing business of his local agency at Columbus 2 CONC , where as already indicated, he stands pre-eminently the leading insuran 2 CONC ce agent in Bartholomew county and one of the most successful in the Stat 2 CONC e. All losses occurring at this agency are adjusted by him, and so hig 2 CONC h does he stand in the confidence of the different companies he represent 2 CONC s that his decisions are accepted as final, his settlements being eminent 2 CONC ly fair and mutually satisfactory to all parities concerned. 2 CONT In 1896 Mr. Kinney, in partnership with Charles A. Turpin, established a 2 CONC t Columbus the Daily and Weekly Star, which he assisted to edit and publi 2 CONC sh until 1902, when the paper was sold to M. A. Lock, under whose managem 2 CONC ent it has since been regularly issued. While satisfactory in many ways 2 CONC , both from a financial and professional point of view, his brief experie 2 CONC nce in the field of journalism was not altogether to his liking, and he d 2 CONC isposed of his interest in the paper with the conviction that he was bett 2 CONC er fitted by nature and training for a business career than for the edito 2 CONC rial sanctum. 2 CONT In politics Mr. Kinney affiliated with the Democratic party until 1902 2 CONC , when, becoming dissatisfied with its attitude toward certain leading is 2 CONC sues, he severed his allegiance and since that year has been a zealous an 2 CONC d uncompromising Republican. While earnest in his advocacy of measures a 2 CONC nd policies which he considers right, he has never aspired to leadership 2 CONC , much less sought the honors or emoluments of office at the hands of hi 2 CONC s fellow citizens, although well qualified to fill any public position wi 2 CONC thin the gift of the people of his city or county. The only office he ev 2 CONC er accepted was that of justice of the peace, the duties of which he disc 2 CONC harged for a period of twelve years, his long tenure in this position dem 2 CONC onstrating not only sound judgment and practical knowledge of the law, bu 2 CONC t also a willingness to serve the people when his tastes and inclination 2 CONC s consulted would have led him to turn the office over to other hands. 2 CONT Fraternally Mr. Kinney is a member of Pythian Lodge No. 17, which he joi 2 CONC ned about twenty-three years ago, and with which he has been actively ide 2 CONC ntified ever since, having held a number of important offices the meanwhi 2 CONC le, besides taking an active interest in the affairs of the order through 2 CONC out the state. In matters religious he holds to the Methodist faith, bei 2 CONC ng a liberal contributor to the church in Columbus, in addition to whic 2 CONC h he also encourages and to the extent of his ability assists all charita 2 CONC ble and benevolent enterprises of whatever name or order. Mr. Kinney i 2 CONC s a man of broad views and generous impulses, enterprising in all the ter 2 CONC m implies and notable example of those powers of mind and qualities of he 2 CONC art that beget confidence and retain esteem. He is also a man of the tim 2 CONC es, fully up-to-date in all that concerns the material prosperity, socia 2 CONC l advancement and moral welfare of the community, zealous in promoting hi 2 CONC s own interests and at the same time active in his efforts to make the wo 2 CONC rld better and prove a blessing to his kind. 2 CONT By his first marriage, to which reference is made in a preceding paragra 2 CONC ph, Mr. Kinney is the father of nine children, only four of whom are livi 2 CONC ng, the wife and mother also deceased, the date of her death being the ye 2 CONC ar 1892; sometime afterward Mr. Kinney contracted a matrimonial allianc 2 CONC e with Mrs. Sarah O. Anderson, the union being without issue. 2 CONT -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONT CIVIL KINNEY EMANUEL H BOX 31 1925 VS GEORGE W KINNEY ETAL CLAI 2 CONC M 2 CONT CIVIL KINNEY EMANUEL (DEC'D) H BOX 14 1924 (EXE) JOHN W.
