Sanford Rowland was listed in the Lee Co Virginia Census in 1840. They left Va in 1847 and settled near the head of the Betty Bowman Branch in Osley Co, KY. Sanford bought each of his sons 100 acres of land as they became of age. The Rowlands had a very large apple orchard and were very mechanically inclined. They designed adn built automatic machines to peel the apples and made their own caastings from an iron ore pit on their property (plow shares, sledges, axes, and other metal tools. There may have been other children born between Alfred and Ade that died. It may be that a child died after an illness suffered on the way to Magoffin County, the reason that they stopped in Owsley Co. Read a letter from Clayton Rowland in 1978.
In the 1870 Census Sanford and Catherine were both 63 years old and living with them were Joseph Tirey age 17 and Jane E Thomas age 11.
