Shirley Joan Huffman

Obituary for Shirley Joan Meyer
Our cherished Shirley Joan Meyer passed into paradise on March 10, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born to Merle and Dorothy Huffman on June 20,1931 in Inglewood, California. She joined her older brother Robert and was soon followed by her younger brother Kenneth. She had a joyous childhood with a lot of great memories.

Growing up Shirley spent a lot of time outdoors and playing with her brothers. She worked at the local movie theater as an usher and later at an orthodontist office. She graduated from Inglewood High School. Her senior year she met her husband, Evar Meyer, while on a blind date, they fell in love immediately. They enjoyed square dancing as part of the Honeycombers Club, traveling, riding motorcycles, and camping with friends. During this time they were blessed with three wonderful children; Kirk, Amy, and Gary.

Shirley took great joy in her children and grandchildren, and loved being a mom and grandma. She volunteered as both Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troop leaders, helped in their classrooms, and continued to be their number one cheerleader throughout their lives. After their children were grown, she and Evar parted ways and Shirley began her great adventures traveling and making friends all over the world. Whether she was hiking Machu Picchu in Peru, seeing the Great Pyramids in Egypt, or riding camels in Israel; her contagious smile and kind heart warmed others and she became a fast friend to all. She delighted in helping others including sponsoring and bringing hope to multiple children through Compassion International.

She lived in Sedona, AZ; Ruidoso and Alto, NM; and Port Orchard, WA where she was a massage therapist, bringing healing to many souls. Her greatest desire in life was to serve God, her family, and to bless those around her. She had a loving and kind spirit and continually saw the good in others and reached out to bless them.

Shirley was preceded in death by Merle and Dorothy Huffman, and Robert and Pamela Huffman. She is survived by Kenneth and Sharon Huffman, her loving children: Kirk Meyer, Amy Brown (Dale), and Gary Meyer (Kara); 11 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services for Shirley will be held Friday, March 26, at 11 a.m., at the Rill Chapel, 1151 Mitchell Ave., Port Orchard. All Covid protocols will be strictly observed. The service can also be accessed following the tab above titled "Photos & Video"

Cheri is preceded in death by her parents Maurice and Marjorie Horine and her brother Kendall Horine.

She is survived by her husband Gerald Reed, her brother David Horine (Debbie), her sisters Catherine Kendall Horine and Valerie “Gay” Northern (Roger), stepsons Gerald Reed, Jr. and Douglas Reed, her precious dog Missy, and many other special family and friends.

Cheri’s family would like to extend a very special Thank You to all the nurses on 5E at Blount Memorial Hospital for all their love and care.

“You think I’ve gone, that I am dead, and life has lost its will. But look around, I am right there, living with you still. I watch your tears, I feel your pain-I see the things you do. I weep as well, each time you cry, my soul, it lives with you. It gives such joy to hear you laugh, and do the things you do. And when you smile o’er bygone days, I smile right with you too. For we’re still one, just you and me, one mind, one soul, one being. Walking forward into life, though only you are seen. And in the stillness of the night, when the pain it really starts, stretch out a little with your mind and draw me to your heart. For I am always right in there, always by your side. For you have been, all my life’s days, my joy, my love, my pride.” (I Have Not Gone — Author Unknown).

There will be a graveside service in honor of Cheri’s life on Thursday, July 9, 2020, 3:30 pm, at Kent Cemetery in Madison, IN.

Cremation by Grandview, Maryville, TN.
