Catherine Trisler

Marriage Records from Jessamine County, Kentucky 1799-1820

Name: Henry Horine
Spouse: Catherine Trisler
Marriage Date: 04 May 1804

James Masters

REFN: M5-2
James was born in or near Richmond, Virginia (Henrico County, an original county formed in 1634. James became a planter near Nicholasville, Jessamine County, KY, and there married Mary Elizabeth Hambrick. The family moved to Decatur County, IN, in 1828. As a result of illness, the family moved back to Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1833. After August of
1850, they moved again to Indiana and rented a farm in Johnson County. The Census of 1860 states that James is "Manager Poor Farm". They moved to Boone County in 1863 where James "arose to prominence as a citizen and farmer and a democratic politician of considerable note", according to "Portrait and Biographical Record of Boone County, Indiana", published in
1895 by A. W. Bowen Company of Chicago, Illinois.

In the 1830 Census of Decatur County, IN, James is listed with one female slave, and three female "free colored" in the household.  In the 1850 Census of Jessamine County, KY, James' occupation is given as "miller" and his eldest sons are a "carder" and a "spinner". They worked
in the woolen mills. There is a Frances Holmes, age 60, born in Virginia, living with the Masters Family. Holmes was the maiden name of James' mother. Perhaps, Frances was an unmarried sister of his mother.

James bought land in Washington Township, Boone County, IN. Specifically, he owned 33 acres which was the Southwest quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section One, Township 19 North, Range One West. He also owned the Southeast quarter of the Southeast quarter of Section One, Township 19 North, Range One West, consisting of 40 acres. These two pieces of land
were about one-half mile apart. Bethel Cemetery is directly across Indiana Highway 39 from the parcel of land first described above and on which James and Mary Masters lived. This land is about five miles almost directly north of Lebanon, about one mile east of the Michael Witt, Jr. homestead, and about three miles from the John Witt homestead.

James died at his homestead in Washington Township, Boone County, IN.  There is some confusion about the number of and names of the children of James and Mary. In James' will of 1870, he names his eight children still alive. The above referenced publication names ten children including Elizabeth, but omits Margaret Ellen, the Margaret E. referred to by James
in his will. The publication names Madison and says he died in childhood and names Joseph H. and says he died in infancy. These two boys would not have been named in the will. There is a Delano or Delany in successive census reports nowhere named in the will or publication.
Much of the data on the ancestry of James and Mary was taken from the research of Paul Herbig, 13818 Shavano Ridge, San Antonio TX 78230.

Mary Elizabeth Polly Hambrick

REFN: M5-1
Mary's middle name was probably Elizabeth since she is called Elizabeth Hambrick in "A Portrait and Biographical Record of Boone County, Indiana" published in 1895 by the A. W. Bowen Company of Chicago, Illinois.

Moreover, her mother's name was Elizabeth.  Mary Elizabeth is called Polly on her marriage record.

In 1880, Mary is living with her son, Henry, and his wife. It may be that she is still living on her own farm and Henry is simply listed as the head of household.

Mary's obituary appeared in the Lebanon Patriot of December 28, 1882, and states that Mary died at her home north of town last Friday. That would make December 22 her date of death, but her tombstone lists December 23.

The obituary refers to Mary as the aged mother of M. M. Masters. It is unclear to whom this refers.
